The Vise: Your extra hand in the kitchen

Transcript

Hey everyone and welcome to the inaugural episode of Not Your Normal Adaptations; the podcast for atypical solutions for independent living. I'm your host, Teresa.

When you think of a vise, you probably envision a heavy tool bolted down to a workbench in a shed or garage. Could you imagine a vise in a kitchen? There's one in mine!

I'm not talking about the adapted kitchen boards from the daily living aids catalogs. I'm talking about the real ones made of cast iron that'll last through an apocalypse.

For folks with use of only one hand or use both hands as a unit, a vise can be a handy (pun intended!) addition to the kitchen. There are quite a few kitchen gadgets that require holding the gadget in one hand and the food in another, such as zesters and graters. That's pretty challenging without two functioning hands. The jaws of a vise securely hold the gadget for you while you move the food over the surface.

A few tips if you're thinking of trying this out:

  • Attach the vise to a kitchen island if you have one. This often has more overhang than the countertops plus it's less in the way as this is not something you going to want to attach and detach all the time.

  • Kitchen gadgets with rubbery grip handles tend to stay more secure in the vise jaws than something with a smoother surface.

  • Lastly, when shopping around for your vise, definitely try to find one that coordinates with your kitchen theme. Here at Not Your Normal Adaptations, we like things to not only be functional, but also to look good.

You're probably thinking, well I have this great food processor which does all this for me. True, so do I! But if you're like me, sometimes you're feeling lazy and don't want to bust out the food processor for one-quarter cup of freshly grated parmesan.

That's it for today's podcast. For pictures and a transcript of this episode, head on over to notyournormaladaptations.com
